Why you should use Ubuntu ?

Many people ask me why I use Ubuntu instead of Windows, the free open-source OS. Ubuntu, as said before, is free, Windows 7, $49.99 ! But that’s not a reason to use Ubuntu, price is not everything. I started using Ubuntu from about a year now and I have to admit that it’s highly better than Windows.

First of all, do you know that Microsoft Windows 7 contain about 30 bugs reported weekly ? It was about 430 in XP version. Ubuntu : None ! No bugs, no security problems, nothing to worry about when surfing the Net ! Ubuntu is by today the securer operating system for the simple reason that no malicious application has been built to attack it. May be it will become a problem later but for now, nothing has been created for it (from my searches thought Google).

Now, I’m going to list the best 15 points for which I choose to stay with Ubuntu instead of returning to Windows :

  1. Faster a million time than Windows, I start my computer, I open Firefox and start surfing, when Windows still in loading page.
  2. Nothing expensive required, it will run in minimum RAM, Disk Space and Processor.
  3. Never have to restart my computer due to large bugs and memory usage, on Windows at least twice a day.
  4. You can use any software for Linux for free, such as OpenOffice, no need to buy Office for about 180$ !
  5. Automatically upgrade anything to any version without any need to do it manually.
  6. Customize anything you like, even software you install !
  7. No need to buy it, you can simply download it or ask for a CD delivery to your home address for FREE ! Just install it ! (Order Ubuntu for FREE from here)
  8. No more FAT32 and NTFS systems, Ubuntu run at a Ext4 system, best choice until now.
  9. The community of Ubuntu is everywhere, you can get the help you want anytime without a support price, neither a technician (If you need help !)
  10. You can install it separated to Windows (running both of them) without messing up with your existent files.
  11. Workspace feature will make you able to manage all your work, no more unused high memory due to opened windows at same time.
  12. Instant Messaging software such as GTalk, MSN and Jabber can be used thought one software.
  13. Easier desktop to manage your programs and your shortcuts.
  14. Gaming is free, easy and highly better than games offered on Windows !
  15. Ubuntu don’t defrag files, it Index them, so that it looks at free clusters before installing, without grabbing them each time and make you obliged to manually defrag your hard disk !

With such list, I don’t think you should continue using Windows ! At least try it and then choose by your self. As said on the list, you can install Windows and Ubuntu in same computer without messing up with your existent files. Always remember, it’s Free and securer !

  2. Yes that’s real, but if Windows People (Microsoft) where really hard working, Windows would be the best ever, but until now, we still see same kind of bugs, errors and high prices

  5. Though I generally like your enthusiasm about Ubuntu, I would like to throw in a few points of thought:

    - What about actual “freedom” (http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html)? This, at the very least to me (and, as I see, to a bunch of other people into software libre as well… ;) ) is way more important than any of the rather “technical” issues pointed out here. The freedom to run the software, the freedom to share copies with your friend without being considered a “pirate” or something like this is probably something you don’t want to forget about.

    - Free as in free beer (“free-of-charge”) is nice, but in the end, you should never forget that, talking about the software in Ubuntu, as well, it’s people spending time, effort, work on getting this kind of software built, maintained, fixed. This, asides Ubuntu making a distribution of it, is mostly the effort of a few thousand(?) developers worldwide voluntarily spending time on doing this. While enjoying the benefits of a “free ride”, always ask yourself whether you would be ready and willing to spend this kind of time working on something given away for free in the end, especially if you have to make a living of it?

    - Same as in Windows, in Ubuntu / Linux / Unix you also will experience situations in which you will want to have a professional, trained technician taking care of things if you encounter problems. If your computer is just a home-use toy, community-only suport eventually is fine. If you’re about to use your computer to get daily work done, you might want to make sure that, in example, misconfigurations or broken computing environments are fixed in a decently short time (hours? minutes?) by someone who knows exactly what to do.

    - Any file systems “sort-of” do defragmentation, otherwise they would not be usable (deleting things and adding things once in a while will need re-organization of things, no matter what technology is at the core of it). This is the same no matter whether you take ext4, xfs, jfs, ntfs, fat or whatever you can come up with.

    Cheers,
    K.

  6. Hello Kristian,

Thank you for your great comment. For the first point, sharing with friends without being considered as a pirate is a feature that no other system is able to provide and certainly not Windows, that’s why it make this point an important one to choose Ubuntu instead of Windows. Software on Ubuntu are easier and better as I can see from my personal experience so what about saying “share better software, personal use for harder ones ?” ;)

    - I’m certainly not making a living from it and you are right in that point, but, tell me, what will you choose if someone offer you a car for free, and another one for huge price ?

    - For problems encountered while using Ubuntu, let me tell you that it show the exact error and why it happened, which make you only search about it thought Google and just repare it by yourself ! While on windows, you just always see “Send Report of this Bug” and never get solution for it ;)

    - For the ext4 feature, I think we are not talking about the same thing ..

    Regards :)

  7. Well… what to say… : I am glad to see you made the experience of the software provided along with Ubuntu being easier to use than applications provided with Windows. If this is the case, it seems Ubuntu has made it quite some way. Being outstandingly honest, in the beginnings of Ubuntu (been using Unix/Linux since 1996 and Ubuntu since 5.04), I was unsure whether the approach of being “end-user-friendly” wouldn’t damage the system, but it seems the work Ubuntu folks did here was/is outstanding, and success seems to prove them right nevertheless… Maybe this also is due to the Ubuntu philosophy – “software for human beings”… ;)

    - Re free cars…. know what you mean. And you’re surely right (also be sure to read http://artlung.com/smorgasborg/C_R_Y_P_T_O_N_O_M_I_C_O_N.shtml for a similar point of view at things). Honestly, indeed, the “free-of-charge” thing is rather helpful, and it is good to promote use of this kind of software and technology. The only two things important in my opinion however: (1) There’s _more_ freedom to it than just being “free-of-charge” (MS Internet Explorer also is free-of-charge, isn’t it?), and (2) after all, someone needs to get work done, which is why I still then and now tend to encourage people not just to download/run Ubuntu but, sooner or later, also become part of the Ubuntu community by lurking on the forums and mailing lists, helping “newbies” (…) getting their first steps done, helping making documentation, … better, or maybe even by writing and contributing small pieces of application code themselves ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOpportunisticDeveloperWeek ). After all, free and active collaboration _also_ is an incredibly nice and great thing about Ubuntu. ;)

    - re ext4: I was referring to #15 on your list, but maybe I got this the wrong way – wasn’t fragmentation (and, subsequently, the need to do defragmentation) what you meant here? :)

    All the best to you,
    K.
